Camping is a great activity whatever the weather, however being without the comfort of your own bed can cause problems for your back. Don’t let back pain stop you from enjoying the great outdoors here as some tips for avoiding discomfort whilst camping.

Local chiropractor Lisa Reed from Harbourside Chiropractic Centre in Portishead “Before setting off pack a number of small bags rather than one large one, to spread the weight of the load. Take regular breaks when travelling to the site and stretch before pitching your tent, remember to take your time to avoid tension building up. Apply care when lifting your camping equipment. Remember to always bend your knees and hips to provide extra support. 60% Brits believe their injuries are caused by carrying incorrectly. So make sure your not one of them.

When you arrive try to park your car as close as possible to avoid unnecessary carrying. Lisa advises “Plan your activities in advance and familiarize yourself with the camping site this will help when packing to avoid adding extra weight and just carrying essentials. During the evening make sure you’ve got a good table and chairs, this will allow you to avoid slouching over your plate. Furthermore try to ensure your stove is at a reasonable height.”

“To protect your back ensure it is fully supported by sleeping on a quality approved camping mat or mattress. These can be tested out before purchasing, as many stores have samples available, its best to opt for a thick mattress to provide as much support as possible”.

Once you have set up your tent prepare your sleeping area first by removing any hazards, which may dig in to your spine. Sleep sensibly keeping your spine in a straight line, and remember to keep hydrated with plenty of water available in the night. Remember to pack a trusty pillow and get any niggles check before you go also be sure to take a pillow to support your neck.
